NSS is an Indian government sponsored public service program conducted by the department of Youth Affairs and sports of the Government of India. It was introduced in the year 1969-70 making the centenary year celebration of the birth of Mahathma Gandhi. The scheme seeks to correct the phenomenon of divorce of education from society by exposing the students to the social realities. “Education through service” is the additional dimension, the NSS imparts to the education system.
